Parent Support in the NICU
Arnot Ogden Medical Center recognizes that having an ill or premature infant is usually unexpected and often frightening. We also recognize that family is very important to the baby's growth. From the moment of admission, we encourage participation in the baby's care and as the baby improves, the family can assume more responsibility for care and get prepared to take the infant home.
Parents are welcome in the unit at any time. Upon arrival, they receive a brochure outlining visiting guidelines in the NICU for other family members and friends. We encourage parents to stay with the infant as much as possible and we provide a parent's room so they may stay with the infant right before discharge.
Parents may call the unit with questions or for an update. The nurse or doctor is happy to speak with a parent at any time. But information about the baby is given only to parents, pediatricians and obstetricians. Friends and relatives should not call the unit, but get information through a parent.
Our social worker and child life specialist are there for you to discuss treatment, discharge, at home-care, or any needs that may arise.
